Foxconn Horror Stories Make Our HR Professionals Cringe

foxconn_workers

On a recent episode of CBS’s “Sunday Morning,” Charles Osgood featured a story about the horrible conditions of a factory in China. Back in 2010, 18 Foxconn workers who could no longer face the long hours and ghastly working conditions threw themselves off the factory’s roof resulting in 10 deaths. Back in May 2011, an explosion in the factory resulted in four deaths and 18 injuries. Just a few weeks ago, 150 workers protested the factory’s working conditions by standing on the roof and threatening suicide. (The workers were coaxed down after two days.) That’s just some of the horrific stories about Foxconn. After hearing these stories, we wondered what could make these workers take such drastic measures. What product is worth more than human life? Look down at your phone. Look at your computer. Look around you. Foxconn produces gadgets such as Amazon's Kindle … [Read more...]

Super Bowl Sunday–How to Lead Your Team to Victory!

super-bowl-2012

It’s almost here. Gather the chips, the salsa, the cheese wiz, and the football-shaped desserts and settle down on your favorite couch in front of the biggest TV in your house. It’s time for the Super Bowl! Now, we’re not taking sides here at the Integrity HR office. But one of our consultants was born and raised in New England, thus she has asked that we focus this blog on the ever so attractive and equally talented, Tom Brady. Tom Brady seems to have it all. The good looks, the gorgeous hair, the glamorous wife and even the fantasitc football stats if all else fails to impress people. But Tom Brady isn’t just a pretty boy who isn’t afraid to be the spokesman for men’s UGG boots. No. He is a great leader. And, as we all know, it takes a great leader to have a winning team. Look at the Colts for example. One season without Peyton Manning and you would think … [Read more...]

Twitter Turfwars and LinkedIn Lawsuits: Are Your Social Media Friends just Followers or Trade Secrets?

wikipedia black out

Wednesday was a pretty dark day. Social media and Internet junkies everywhere were going through withdrawal as many sites “blacked out” in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect Intellectual Property Act. According to Wikipedia, whose content was unavailable yesterday (unless you knew super secret tricks to get around the blocked site), 162 million people saw their message yesterday and 8 million followed their instructions to contact politicians. This internet protest which included top sites like Wikipedia, Google, Firefox, Reddit, Flickr, WIRED, Wordpress, The Oatmeal, Facebook, Greenpeace, Boing Boing, and Minecraft led to eight U.S. lawmakers withdrawing their support for the proposed bills. And just today, President Obama said he would not support SOPA or Protect IP. As a result, SOPA has been delayed for now (the House will revisit the issue next … [Read more...]

Election 2012: Politics at the Office

election2012

There are just some things you shouldn’t talk about at the office—sex, money, religion and of course politics. But as we all know, these taboo topics often make up the most interesting water cooler chatter. And as the 2012 Presidential Election heats up, so do your politically passionate employees. Conversations turn from, “did you see what Kim Kardashian was wearing at that after party” to “did you see what that candidate was wearing at the debate? His tie totally didn’t match his pin-striped suit.” (Okay, maybe a little less shallow than that, but you get my point). After a while, it can be hard to ignore the elephant (or maybe the donkey) in the room. So what do you do? Ban political banter? As a supervisor, manager or CEO, the last thing you want is an all out brawl (verbal or physical) amongst your employees. But you can’t post a sign up that says, “NO … [Read more...]

The Do’s and Don’ts of Office Holiday Presents

Office presents

Now that you have survived the office holiday party (see our previous blog about that), you have one more hurdle to clear before you can enjoy this wonderful time of year. And that would be—Office Holiday Presents! Would my boss like a new tie or maybe a necklace? Is a tape dispenser shaped like a high heel appropriate? What about your co-workers? Maybe Susie would like another picture frame. No, her desk is already covered in them. Maybe Jimmy would like a new stapler; his is always jamming up and creating a back up in the copy room. Or do I just not get anyone a gift? Or maybe just get my closest friends gifts. The other employees will never know… Stop freaking out! It’s going to be okay. The HR professionals at Integrity HR are here to help you out of this holiday mess. We sat down and compiled a list of what we like to call, “The Do’s and Don’ts of Office … [Read more...]

Ho Ho Holiday Scheduling Can Be A Nightmare

santa on motorcycle

It’s that wonderful time of year when people synchronize their house lights to Trans-Siberian Orchestra tracks, litter their front lawns with inflatable Santas on motorcycles, and use their elbows as lethal weapons to get that last Justin Bieber Christmas album. Such a beautiful time. Unfortunately, when employees are dreaming of half-priced electronics and eggnog by the fire place, the furthest thing from their minds is work. This is the time of the year when employees want to be off with their families celebrating the holidays. As the employer, you are often perceived as Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge who chains his employees to their desk without even offering them frosted gingerbread cookies or space heaters, just to keep the business operating. When your business is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year, you have to have a staff at all times and this … [Read more...]

Put down the tissues, Louisville, and get back to work

sad-employees

Louisville was ranked the 5th saddest city in the U.S. We’ll give you a moment to grab a tissue and cry over that. Yes, it’s true. We, Louisvillians, are sad, sad people (according to Men’s Health magazine that is). Men’s Health magazine just produced their list of “Frown Towns” which was compiled after months of statistical research (at least that’s what they claim). The magazine calculated suicide rates, unemployment rates and the percentage of households that use antidepressants as well as the number of people who report feeling the blues all or most of the time. The countdown started at #100 (being the saddest city) and that not-so-coveted place went to St. Petersburg, FL. Not sure how any city that had 768 straight days of sunshine could be so depressed! The top 5 rounded out with Detroit, Memphis, Tampa, and of course, our beloved city Louisville … [Read more...]

At Least Be Thankful Your Business Is Not On This List

thanksgiving-vs-christmas

Sometimes it feels like Thanksgiving is just the day before Black Friday. I’m pretty sure for every Thanksgiving commercial there is, there is about 10 Black Friday commercials (and even more Christmas commercials!) Now that I think about it, has there EVEN been a Thanksgiving commercial this year? What ever happened to the Pillsbury Crescent rolls commercials where the kids are fighting over the last roll until Mom brings out another full basket? Well, that mom is probably taking a nap or practicing her Black Friday routes in preparation for the big day. Or maybe she’s busy putting the Christmas presents under the tree. We think everyone needs to slow down and enjoy this holiday. Take a second and be THANKFUL for what you have! That’s what Thanksgiving is all about right? We all get caught up in the not-so-much-fun tasks that are a part of running a business, like … [Read more...]

How To Avoid An Occupy Wall Street-esque Movement At Your Business

occupy wall street raid

As of Tuesday morning, Occupy Wall Street is no longer occupying Zuccotti Park in New York City. At 1:20 a.m. on Tuesday (according to the official Occupy Wall Street website, yes, that exists), Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered police officers to raid the two-month-old Occupy Wall Street encampment in Zuccotti Park. Mayor Bloomberg said the park’s owners had asked for the city’s help in enforcing its rules against sleeping there. So police, armed in riot gear, cleared out protesters and their tents. Now these aren’t just any old backyard camping tents the police officers threw out. These tents held a library, media center, legal aid, information and even the sanitation areas and they were all broken down and placed into rolling trash containers. But don’t think this movement is going down without a fight. Zuccotti Park was the birthplace and main stage for what has become … [Read more...]
